Latin pop music certainly wouldn't be the same without the added talents of A.B. Quintanilla. As the brother of Selena, he seemed destined for success in the music world, and no one was surprised when he exceeded the expectations. After his sister's tragic death, A.B. Quintanilla put out the light on his stardom, letting the darkness creep in for a while. But in 1999, the brave, inspirational musician popped back in the recording studio, this time known as A.B. Quintanilla y los Kumbia Kings, a bilingual collective that proved to not be short on hit songs. The group infused traditional Mexican music, most notably cumbia with familiar American genres like hip-hop, funk and reggae to create a sound that seemingly cannot be paralleled.
Their debut album, called Amor, Familia y Respeto, was an instant success, and the band had no trouble hitting the number one spot on the charts time after time. Some memorable singles from their first effort included "Azucar," "Fuiste Mala," "Se Fue Mi Amor" and "Reggae Kumbia." The album also was nominated for a Grammy, a Latin Grammy and a Billboard Latin Music Award, the latter of which they ended up winning. A follow up album, Shhh!, which dropped in 2001, also met with similar success and enjoyed the number two spot on the charts before eventually climbing to claim the number one spot.
4 was another album that was rich in chart-topping singles. This also was the effort by A.B. Quintanilla to bring in a star-studded cast of collaborators. Some of the hot artists that appeared on the track list included Juan Gabriel, El Gran Silencio and Ozomatli. Two especially big hits, "No Tengo Dinero" and "Don't Wanna Try," caught the attention of fans and helped to recruit even more people to the blossoming fan base around the world. By the time 2003 and 2004 rolled around, however, discontentment was growing among the band members, with many demanding more pay from Quintanilla. Many of the original members left the band in 2004, although Quintanilla re-grouped to heightened success, only to later quit the band himself after an on-going feud with a fellow member.
