The most influential rock band of all time, The Beatles took the nation by storm in the 1960’s. The group was simply ground-breaking in terms of what they brought to the table of popular music. They were unquestionably the most popular and most accomplished band of the decade. The way the group arrived and maintained immense popularity is unequaled in the history of music and probably will remain so forever. Never afraid to reinvent themselves, The Beatles molded their sound to flow with the changes of an evolving decade.
Perhaps the most inventive group in rock and roll history, The Beatles were simply like nothing anyone had ever heard before. While Lennon and McCartney were the more impressive vocalists in the group, the band’s harmonies were invigorating and showed that it was all four members that made their music so divine. One reason The Beatles were as cohesive as they were as a whole was their familiarity with one other. John Lennon, Paul McCartney and George Harrison were playing together in the ‘50s as members of The Quarrymen, who became the Silver Beatles in 1960 before eventually dropping the “silver” to settle on the name that has become synonymous with rock and roll greatness. The Beatles went through several drummers before Ringo Starr joined the band just weeks before they recorded their single “Love Me Do.”
When Capitol Records released “I Want to Hold Your Hand” in the U.S., it shot to the top of the charts in a matter of weeks of its release in 1963. It was after the band’s famed appearances on the Ed Sullivan show in 1964 that Beatlemania erupted. In the first week of April that year, The Beatles had the top five selling singles in the U.S., a mind-boggling concept that accurately conveys The Beatles utter dominance of the music market at the time.
The Beatles became accustomed to their songs reaching number one, as 27 of them did, all the way up until their break up in 1970. Unlike most other bands in history, the end of the Beatles era came while the group was still unquestionably on top. The Beatles’ work was never on the decline and nobody was ever calling for the band to hang it up. They left the game in a career that only consisted of a prime, which may have contributed to the fact many appreciators of music consider them to be the best band in the history of rock and roll, and it would be hard to argue with them.
There is no denying the mark that The Beatles left on rock and roll and the music industry in general. Their library of what seems like countless hits is cherished by millions of people around the globe. It is highly unlikely that any music act of any kind will ever have an effect on the world of music even remotely resembling that of The Beatles in the 1960s.
