Although perhaps best known for their hit song "Stayin' Alive," the Bee Gees formed in the mid to late ‘60s, experiencing the apex of their success during the disco days and continuing to remain the definitive white soul group of all time.

The Gibb brothers Barry and twins Robin and Maurice started performing in their native Manchester at a young age as a novelty act before their family moved to Brisbane, Australia. Then known as the Brothers Gibb, the trio changed their name to the Bee Gees and soon gained notoriety Down Under with their own local television show and their first single, "Three Kisses of Love," in 1962. When the British explosion happened in the U.K., the Bee Gees decided to move back to England and try to get in on the action. Their single "Spicks and Specks" got them noticed, and they added guitarist Vince Melouney and drummer Colin Peterson to round out their act, eventually signing with Atlantic. The Bee Gee's single "Massachussetts" was their first chart-topper in the U.K., but after a few albums and a string of successful singles, the group seemed to hit a wall in 1969. Robin left the group and eventually all of the Bee Gees dissolved.

In the early ‘70s the Bee Gees came back together and issued a handful of hits including "Lonely Days," their first number one song in America before enduring another slump due to the changing musical climate. It was at this point that the Bee Gees decided to focus on dance rhythms and funk beats with a new band in place comprised of Alan Kendall on lead guitar, Dennis Byron at the drums and Blue Weaver on keyboards. After scoring a string of hits with their new sound, the Bee Gees were asked to contribute to the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack and "Stayin' Alive," "How Deep Is Your Love" and "Night Fever" all topped the charts. Toward the end of the decade the disco days were waning and the Gibbs brothers endured personal tragedy when Andy Gibb (the fourth Gibb brother) lost his life due to drug and alcohol abuse in '88. The Bee Gees continued to make music until Maurice passed away due to cardiac arrest from complications of a surgery in 2003.
