Like many aspiring country singers, Billy Currington relocated to the country music capital of Nashville, Tennessee with high hopes of not returning to his native Rincon, Georgia without a record contract. Currington worked for a concrete company by day and performed at locals clubs and worked on his demos on the side until his big break came when singer Mark Wills liked what he heard and hooked Currington up with his producer, Carson Chamberlain. Eventually Currington got the record contract he had always dreamed of with label Mercury and released his first single, "Walk a Little Straighter" in 2003. The autobiographical lyrics of "Walk a Little Straighter" were inspired by Currington's experiences with his alcoholic father, and the chorus of the single was actually written by Currington when he was just 12 years old. Hot on the heels of his first single, Currington released his eponymous debut album later that year.

Two years after Billy Currington graced the country music scene, the singer released his sophomore effort, Doin' Somethin' Right in 2005. In the meantime, Currington toured heavily to support his first album and also appeared in a duet with country music (and pop crossover) queen Shania Twain on a new track for her 2004 greatest hits compilation, entitled "Party for Two." Twain and Currington share pop tendencies in their country music that make their sound more universal, and after the release of his first album critics hailed Currington as a mix of Kenny Chesney, Shania Twain and Alan Jackson. Doin' Somethin' Right's debut single "Must Be Doin' Somethin' Right" earned a place on the pop charts and was followed by a string of successful singles such as 2007's "Good Directions" and "Tangled Up" that hint at another album in the works. One thing is for sure about this burgeoning country star, his feet (no doubt wearing cowboy boots) have remained firmly planted in the ground as his star ascends.
