Best known for their inclusion in the anti-violence, anti-sexual exploiting hip-hop group Native Tongues alongside rap heavyweights like Afrika Bambaataa, Queen Latifah, De La Soul and Common, the New York-based golden age rappers Black Sheep enjoyed immeasurable success in the 1990s and early 2000s with hit number one charting singles "Strobelite Honey" and "The Choice is Yours," though the duo had several other hits through the years, as well.

Comprised of Andre "Dres" Titus and William "Mista Lawnge" McLean, Black Sheep began as the brainwork of the New York-based duo who grew up in North Carolina. In the mid-1980s, the Jungle Brothers' Mike Gee struck a friendship with Mista Lawnge, connecting him to the Native Tongues family. Inspired by this group, Lawnge set out to form Black Sheep, recruiting the MC Dres as the other half of the newly-formed rap duo. "Flavor of the Month," Black Sheep's debut single, was one of the hottest releases of 1991, storming straight to the Billboard charts while the group quickly followed up with their debut album A Wolf in Sheep's Clothing, also a 1991 release and a charting musical piece. Black Sheep's next single "The Choice is Yours" was a smash success with the MTV crowd in the early ‘90s as well, and the East Coast rappers eventually sold close to one million copies of their debut album.

Pushing their star up even further, Black Sheep hob-nobbed with rap heavyweights Main Source, Gang Starr, Kool G Rap and the Pharcyde on the Brand New Heavies' Heavy Rhyme Experience, Vol. 1 album, and the duo kept rising with their next album, 1994's Non-Fiction. The release didn't hold the same clout as Black Sheep's previous release, and the disappointment in album sales led to the duo's disbandment following its release. While Dres and Mista Lawnge both worked on solo albums, they eventually reunited to produce the soundtrack for Once in the Life, also touring the nation for a short time.
