Finland was gaining fame during the late 1990s because of their fresh hip-hop beats and groundbreaking electronica. Bomfunk MC's brought in both of those elements to create some of the most well-loved tracks out there. The group was a collaboration between B.O.W., whose real name is Raymond Ebanks, and DJ Gizmo, whose real name is Ismo Lappalainen. They teamed up with producer Jaakko Salvaara to work on material. They started gaining momentum in their home country with the release of the single "Freestyler" in 1999. From Finland, it branched out to Denmark, Germany and the rest of Europe. Over the course of the year 2000, "Freestyler" won enough of a following to be the best-selling single in Europe that year.
Bomfunk MC's dropped their first album, In Stereo, in 2000. They won the Best Nordic Act at the MTV Europe Music Awards that year. The duo also started performing live around Europe, becoming a favorite show of fans across the continent. Other hits from this release include "B-Boys and Flygirls" and "Uprocking Beats." The album also reached to top of the charts in Finland. They released their follow up album, Burnin' Sneakers, in 2002. Soon afterwards, DJ Gismo decided to leave the band.
After B.O.W. replaced DJ Gismo with Riku Pentti and Okke Komulainen, Bomfunk MC's got to work on a new album. Pentti and Komulainen were formerly a duo known as the Skillsters. Adding a few more names, Bomfunk MC's released Reverse Psychology in 2004, again with producer Jaakko Salvaara. The album barely made a blip on the radar in much of Europe, with a few singles making it onto the charts in Germany. DJ Gismo went on to form another band. The band has not released any new material since 2004 but has not officially broken up either.
