Seldom have there been better things to come out of the Jamaican ghettos than reggae artist/rapper Bounty Killer. His rare combination of true reggae style and spitfire rapping transformed the ‘90s with more than a few number ones on the Billboard charts.
Bounty Killer was born with the name Rodney Price in the Kingston, Jamaica ghetto of Trenchtown, and despite a poor childhood he started playing around with his father's small sound system at the age of nine. His musical focus became clear after age 14, when he innocently got stuck in the middle of a gun battle between political factions and took a hit from a stray bullet while walking home from school one day. Bounty Killer eventually recovered from the battle wound, but this incident is where the rapper got much of his musical material from, becoming known for his gun talk. Bounty Killer's career started to take shape when he performed for sound systems like Metromedia, Bodyguard and Stereo Two, all the while he and his friends congregated around King Jammy's recording studio hoping to strike it big. In 1990, Bounty Killer's hopes came true, as he met Jammy's brother Uncle T, who recorded his first tune "Dub Fi Dub." The single caught fame with local crowds, and in 1992 Bounty Killer came out with a string of singles like "Copper Shot," "Spy Fi Die," "New Gun" and "Guns Out." Scoring big with the singles, Bounty Killer's debut album Jamaica's Most Wanted was released in 1993, the same year the rapper's monumental lyrical feud with his rival Beenie Man flared up. Accusing each other of being copycats, this Bounty Killer/Beenie Man rival would continue throughout the rappers' careers.
Broadening his musical horizons to the wide realm of street subjects instead of just guns, Bounty Killer continued to romp through U.S. rap with his reggae-inspired songs, even appearing in the 2002 Super Bowl pregame show alongside No Doubt for the performance of "Hey Baby,"
