Buddy, who comes from generations of European musicians, started out performing in when he was only 13 years old, playing with local dance bands in his native New Haven, Conneticut. At 15 he had joined the Yale Collegians and was touring the East Coast playing at parties and college dances. In his early years he often sat in on jam sessions at the famous Hickory House in New York. It was there that he was discovered and encourage in his music by Artie Shaw.
At Artie's urging Buddy moved to New York and applied to Juilliard School of Music, where he received a full scholarship. When he finished studying at Julliard, Buddy began his career as a side-man for the hotel bands of Eddie Duchin and Vincent Lopez. In 1936 he was able to take part in Vocalion sessions with Sharkey Bonano's Sharks of Rhythm, developing himself into a Jazz musician. He also had his start in Big Band with Artie Shaw that same year.
In 1942 Buddy joined the Navy and was in until the end of the war in '45. He spent the remainder of the decade as a studio musician. Although his first attempt at leading his own band failed, in 1950, Buddy never gave up the dream and spent much of the following two decades in the studio. Then, in the late ‘70s, he took over Tommy Dorsey's ghost band. Since then he has remained as one of a few full-time Big Band leaders.
