Is there a problem with modern hip-hop? There is, if you ask Camp Lo or their fans. That problem is that the genre has forgotten its roots and refuses to be influenced by some of the greats from the 1970s. That isn't true of Camp Lo. They mix hip-hop, funk and jazz, resulting in a sound that is both fresh and reminiscent of the greats of decades past. Their rap names are decidedly different, Sonny Cheeba and Geechi Suede, but their real names are ironically similar. Cheeba's name is Salahadeen Wilds and Suede is Saladine Wallace. Their first names are different versions of the same Muslim name.

The duo was introduced through a friend and they decided to start working together as Camp Lo. Their music had mostly Blaxploitation-style lyrics, and it only took them eight months to find a record deal. Their 1996 single, "Coolie High," was on the soundtrack for the film The Great White Hype. That single made it to number 25 on the Hot Rap Singles chart as well as number 62 on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Singles & Tracks chart. They released an accompanying album, Uptown Saturday Night, in 1997. Another single from that release, "Luchini (This Is It)," was even more successful and reached number five on the Hot Rap Single Chart, 31 on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Singles & Tracks chart and 50 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.

They released Short Eyes in 2001 and Let's Do It Again in 2002, but they didn't find the same success as their first release. The releases were, however, big this with their loyal fan base and still attracted attention from the mainstream music industry. They took a step back to work on side projects and also switched labels, and then released their latest album, Black Hollywood, which dropped in 2007.
