Citizen Cope is the music of one amazing artist, Clarence Greenwood. Although Greenwood was born in Memphis, Tennessee, he spent time in Texas with his aunt and uncle and also Washington D.C. He had played the trumpet as a youth but learned the guitar as a teen. He now plays the guitar, keyboard and sings for Citizen Cope along with being the DJ, songwriter and producer.
Early in the 1990s, Greenwood was beginning to cause a buzz in the D.C. music scene with a demo that no one seemed to be able to pinpoint. His had aspects of folk, hip-hop, soul and rock. Even though he could have come out with a debut album then, Greenwood took it slow and instead was on the tracks for the rapper Basehead and later Lazy K. He was signed with Capitol Records in 1997 but never actually released an album through them.
He moved locations to Brooklyn, New York and labels to Dreamworks and released Citizen Cope in 2002. Although one of his songs, "Sideways," was picked up by Carlos Santana to use n his CD, the album didn't do as well as hoped and Greenwood moved to Arista Records. Arista closed before he could release anything, and Greenwood was soon with RCA and released The Clarence Greenwood Recordings in 2004. One of the songs from that album, "Son's Gonna Rise," became a popular song to be used on TV and in film.
His second album also brought a tour that solidified Citizen Cope's fanbase. Most of the songs from his third release in 2006, Every Waking Moment, were written during the tour. Fans got to see a deeper side of the artist with songs like "Every Waking Moment" and "Back Together." Fans can't wait for more of the incredible music of Clarence Greenwood/Citizen Cope.
