Cyndi Lauper was born on June 22, 1953 in Brooklyn, New York and raised in Queens. She dropped out of school in her late teens to pursue music with local bands. The intensity of the training led to a strained voice and she had to seek help from the well known vocal teacher, Katherine Agresta. Her voice was eventually restored, and in that same year Lauper began to write her own music with keyboardist John Turi.

The collaboration between Turi and Lauper resulted in the creation of the group Blue Angel. The band had an unfortunate and short history, when their first album was woefully unsuccessful Lauper was forced to declare bankruptcy resulting in the band being dissolved. Though this failure resulted in several years of singing at local venues, Lauper was still able to find success.

In '83 she was signed to Portrait, and released her debut album She's So Unusual which became a huge hit. With this success, Lauper became one of the brightest stars of the MTV era. Her hit song "Girls Just Want To Have Fun" became the title song for one of the most popular chick flicks of the ‘80s. The album sold five million copies, and she won a fan base of incredible proportions.

Cyndi continued to enjoy variable success throughout the ‘80s, although there has not been the success that her first album produced, she continues to have powerful vocals that are going strong today. She has also made forays into other aspects of the entertainment industry, working as a director and actress. She has been nominated for 13 Grammy Awards, 2 Emmys, 2 American Music Awards and 18 MTV Awards. She is still enjoying the fruits of her musical prowess and continues to produce albums today.
