2 Live Crew's bass producer DJ Magic Mike has been a staple in the drum and bass movement since the ‘80s, when his DJ Magic Mike and the Royal Posse album appeared out of nowhere in '89 and sold over a million copies.
Born Michael Hampton in Orlando, Florida, the hot spot for hundreds of other drum and bass producers and DJs, Magic Mike started his career in the music biz before he even reached puberty. Working the ring, that is, rolling rink, the 14 year old Hampton started selling mix tapes for skating patrons while hosting a drive-time radio show. He continued to mature his sound throughout high school, focusing on the Florida club scene before debuting his first wax in 1987 with "Boot the Booty" on Vision Records.
With the help of local promoter Tom Reich, Magic Mike took a chance with Cheetah Records on the compromise that if the disc jockey's records sold well he would gain a half-share in the company. Magic Mike's luck came together, as his first singles, which include "Magic Mike Cutz the Record" and "Drop the Bass" became instant club anthems and paved the way for his debut album that arrived in 1989. With his sophomore effort, 1990's Bass is the Name of the Game, DJ Magic Mike worked more on his own and saw success as the first instrumental LP to reach gold status. As he continued in the genre, more of his albums went gold, like Ain't Not Doubt about it, and Bass the Final Frontier, while he continued to join the club circuit of fellow Floridians and hit radio airwaves with more club anthems like "Drop," and "Feel the Bass." He continues to create more mix tapes and has worked with several rappers like Sir Mix-a-Lot, 2 Live Crew, MC Shy D and Poison Clan.
