Singer/songwriter Dan Fogelberg strung together hit after hit and platinum album after platinum album during the ‘70s and ‘80s with his poignant soft rock. Growing up in Illinois, Fogelberg got an early taste of music from his father, a talented musician in his own right. Fogelberg took up the piano first and was hooked instantly. As a boy, he listened to any record he could get his hands on. Fogelberg received his first guitar from his grandfather at age 12, just about the time he first heard the Beatles and began to associate songwriting with music.
Within a year, he was in a band and writing songs at an enthusiastic pace. He continued to hone his craft as he made his way through high school, college, the turmoil of the Vietnam War and a supporting spot for Van Morrison before landing a record contract with Columbia in the early ‘70s. His debut album, Home Free, was released in 1972. The melodic gem was a hit with anyone who heard it, though it lacked a radio single to generate significant buzz. Fogelberg would continue to write, and eventually collaborations with Joe Walsh and Graham Crosby led to the assembly of Souvenirs. Released in 1974, Souvenirs was Fogelberg's first commercially successful record, the first of many.
After experiencing a writer's block of sorts in the late ‘70s, Fogelberg would produce some of his most critically acclaimed and commercially successful music during the latter part of the decade and the early part ‘80s. Throughout the ‘80s, Fogelberg sculpted his sound in new ways before receding from the public eye a bit towards the end of the decade. He returned in the early ‘90s with a sound that traced back to his teenage roots. He continued to write music and produced several stellar collaborative efforts before being diagnosed with prostate cancer in the mid-2000s, which eventually led to his death in 2007.
