Born in South Africa but raised mostly along the East Coast of the United States, Dave Matthews was inspired to write and play music by a friend of his, Tim Reynolds. Once he took to the stage, it was clear that Dave Matthews was a natural at giving fans an engaging live musical performance. He subsequently started a band around himself in 1991. Dave Matthews Band wasted no time securing local shows to play, and once they had a large enough audience in and around Charlottesville, Virginia, they went on tour, focusing on college campuses and festivals that might attract a younger following.

After signing with RCA in 1994, Dave Matthews Band hit superstardom with Under the Table and Dreaming and its most popular track, "What Would You Say." Crash, Before These Crowded Streets, Everyday, Busted Stuff and Stand Up, along with multiple live albums, would follow. Dave Matthews Band came to epitomize 1990s college rock. They toured extensively, collaborated with other artists and peppered the charts with hit single after hit single until the early 2000s.

Dave Matthews struck out on his own with Some Devil, which came out in September of 2003. Although he used the help of a different band to compliment him, the album uniquely distinguished the solo artist work from the usual Dave Matthews Band style that his fans had settled comfortably into for the past decade. Some Devil unearthed dark spirits from Dave, but his loyal and humongous fan base followed him down to the brooding depths of introspective self-reflection. Tracks like "Gravedigger," Save Me," and "Oh" are the highlights of a low-lit, but nonetheless musically rich debut solo album. Dave Matthews is still a formidable force in music, and it's not inconceivable that this famous front man could become the next Bruce Springsteen or Bob Dylan- an artist who continues to tour and produce music well into a third or fourth decade in the mainstream.
