San Francisco is known for its harbor of eclectic bands and styles, and the indie noise pop group Deerhoof is no different from the Bay Area's finest bands. The quartet has lit up the charts with experimental music, charting with two albums and harnessing the potential for more.
The eccentric Deerhoof began as an idea from guitarist Rob Fisk and drummer/keyboardist Greg Saunier in 1994. The two schemed up the workings of the band, and by 1995, they had tested the waters with the 7" releases Return of the Woods M'Lady and For Those of Us on Foot, which jumbled wave-inspired sound and eclectic beats. Soon after the two releases, Deerhoof began working out their musical kinks, and along with the addition of vocalist/bassist Satomi Matsuzaki came the group's 1996 7" self-titled release, a step up from the previous two. The album paved the way for a record deal with Kill Rock Stars and their next album, 1997's The Man, the King, the Girl. Working the lines between abstraction and structure, Deerhoof solidified their funky signature sound, releasing 1999's Holdy Paws. The album wasn't as big a success as the group had hoped for, and soon thereafter Fisk exited the band to pursue solo work.
Continuing onward without one of the band's founding fathers, Deerhoof released the 2001 album Halfbird (recorded before Fisk's departure), and John Dieterich joined the band as the new guitarist. Picking up momentum, the group released 2002's Reveille, which led to 2003's Apple O' and 2004's Milk Man before finally scoring big with their 2005 album Runners Four. Producing the album while also touring the U.S., Europe and Japan, Deerhoof's hard work finally paid off when Runners Four finally hit the Billboard charts. Partaking in a 2006 tour with the Flaming Lips, the Fiery Furnaces and Mark Timony, Deerhoof has continued to pack a punch with the 2007 album Friend Opportunity, the band's first to make the Billboard 200.
