Derek Webb was one of the founding members of the Christian folk rock band Caedmon's Call. He was with the band for 10 years, leaving in 2003, shortly after he got married, to embark on a solo project. The album was called She Must and Shall Go Free. The album is an amazing and in-depth look at love, life and the church presented as a view through the eyes of a man who loves the church of Christ. His message is about the need that the church has for Christ, gently reproving the members of the church for their tendency to leave the gospel behind in their search for greater spiritual experience. He reminds them that they need to hold onto the gospel and work towards getting themselves back in line with the gospel.

His most recent album The Ringing Bell is an eclectic mix of music about politics and love. His lyrics are challenging, dealing with subjects such as death, genocide, self-sacrifice and double standards. It challenges the church to really focus on God, what he desires and not on their self-righteousness.

Webb was born in Klein, Texas and now resides near Nashville Tenessee. His wife is fellow singer-songwriter Sandra McCracken, and they attend Christ Community Church, a congregation of the Presbyterian Church in America located in Franklin. His other solo albums include Mocking Bird from 2005 and I See Things Upside Down from 2004. His solo career has taken off tremendously, and he is currently getting ready to take part in the Art Music Justice Tour which starts on September 19, 2008 at Wheaton Bible Church. Webb and his wife will be performing alongside musicians Brandon Heath, Sara Groves, and Charlie Peacock.
