Destiny's Child was one of the leading R&B female groups of the late ‘90s. The original DC was formed by manager Mathew Knowles in Houston in 1990, featuring his nine-year-old daughter Beyonce and friend LaTavia Robertson. In 1992, Beyonce's cousin Kelendria "Kelly" Rowland was added, and the trio made their debut onto the world rapping on Star Search. Later, LeToya Luckett was added to the mix, and the group named after a Bible passage was complete. After four years of being a solid opening act, DC signed with Columbia.

Their self-titled debut album featured a single for the '97 film Men in Black, as well as collaborations with Jermanie Dupri and Wyclef Jean. They won three Soul Train Lady of Soul Awards and went back to the studio to create The Writing's on the Wall. The sophomore effort debuted the number one single "Bills, Bills, Bills," followed by their biggest hit, "Say My Name." The single earned the girls two Grammys, as they also gained two new members. Earlier Roberson and Luckett wanted to part ways with manager Knowles and filed a lawsuit against him. DC continued to reel in the success, as the album went on to sell 8 million copies. Basking in the success didn't last long for fourth member Franklin, as she was asked to leave the group after missing several promotional appearances.

With a finalized trio set, the group set out to record more explosive albums and number one hits including "Independent Women, Pt. 1," the anthem for the film Charlie's Angels. At this point, Beyonce stood apart from the other three, writing and producing, with their third album Survivor showcasing her leading talents. The remaining women all set out on their own careers, Williams releasing a few Gospel albums and appearing on Broadway, Rowland hitting the R&B charts with other artists and Beyonce going on to create an empire around her leading sound.
