Everly Brothers

Everly Brothers

The Everly Brothers established themselves early on as one of the most important rock 'n' roll duos of the century. Their legacy is still felt among musicians today who regard their timeless melodies as some of the best to ever infiltrate the music industry. Don and Phil Everly comprised the singing duo and were introduced to music at an early age by performing on a local radio station alongside the rest of their family during the mid-1950s. When they were in their teens, the brothers collectively decided to head out to Nashville to try their hand at conventional country music. They met with little success until they signed with the Cadence label and released their first hit single "Bye Bye Love," which reached the number two spot on the charts in 1957. The song helped introduce a wave of other hot tunes like "Wake Up Little Susie," "All I Have to Do Is Dream" and "When Will I Be Loved."

The Everly Brothers were known for their day-dreaming reflections and sentimental harmonies that could pull at anyone's heart strings who felt stirred by young love. In 1960, The Everly Brothers left Cadence for a promising contract with the relatively new label, Warner Brothers. In fact, The Everly Brothers would help push Warner Brothers own success as a label in the coming years. During the early '60s, they continued releasing mega-hits like "Cathy's Clown," which is still considered one of their greatest songs s it went onto become a number one hit. They also released the popular melodies "Walk Right Back," "Temptation," "Ebony Eyes" and "That's Old Fashioned."

After they took over the industry with their seemingly unstoppable success, they entered a period of dwindling sales and hard times. Don nearly died of an addiction to speed, and an aspiration for both to become actors never materialized. The Everly Brothers had lost their appeal in the U.S., but they went onto to become popular icons in Europe with their Top 40 Single "Gone Gone Gone." In the late sixties, they started focusing on country-rock music, emphasized by their album, Roots. By the time the 1970s rolled around the pair had lost their luster and split up, each embarking on solo careers. Eventually in the mid-1980s, they rejoined together and still tour today.
