Exposé was formed in Miami, Florida in 1984, by producer/songwriter Lewis A. Martineé who brought together the original lineup of Alé Lorenzo, Sandra "Sandeé" Casanas, and Laurie Miller. The group became known for their Latin-flavored free-style pop. Even though the original line-up did not gain the fame that the first one did, the group was still popular. Their single "Point of No Return" became famous as a club hit and became the defining example of Latin Freestyle. In 1985 the upheaval that led to an entirely new line-up for the trio took place. It started with Casanas leaving the group to pursue a solo career, followed by Lorenzo who left to pursue other aspirations. Jeanette Jurado and Gioia Bruno were brought on to replace the two women, and were joined by Ann Curless shortly before the completion of the debut album when Miller left because of business and personal issues.

The trio went on to record some top-ranking albums. Exposure hit number 16 on the Billboard 200 and 20 on Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums, after its release in 1987. The album generated four top singles with "Seasons Change" reaching number one on The Billboard Hot 100. What You Don't Know also did well, ranking at 33 and 94 respectively, and generating two top ten singles. This was followed by the less successful, but still popular Exposé in 1992, which did generate the number eight single "I'll Never Get over You Getting over Me."

Exposé was released two years after the trio lost Bruno to throat problems, which were caused by a benign tumor attached to her vocal cords. Kelly Moneymaker eventually replaced her, although the group held out for two years in hopes that Bruno would be restored to them. Moneymaker's voice is on the album Exposé, but her time with the group was short as the girls disbanded in 1995 to pursue solo careers. Bruno eventually recovered from her tumor and returned to singing. Curless, Jurado and Bruno started performing together again in 2006.
