Fatty Koo was formed in Columbus, Ohio as a musical collective made up of members Eddie B, Gabrielle, Marya, Ron and Valure. The group met through the Columbus CAPACITY youth arts program, which was started to give young artists in the urban area a chance to work with famous artists and administrators. The organization has now evolved into the Transit Arts program, which is devoted to expand the artistic abilities of the youth in the city and give them a chance to dream big and take their art to a higher level.

Fatty Koo started up in 2003, the same year that the Songwriters Summit for Oneness was proposed to the CAPACITY director of education, Jackie Claderone. The idea of the summit was to promote racial unity through the arts. It was through this summit that the five young musicians had their voice heard for the first time, recording a song on the John Lennon Songwriting Bus, and Fatty Koo was formed.

Because the group is a collaborative one, the musical sounds that they produce are varying and important. Touching on R&B, Hip-Hop, Jazz, Latin, Pop, Dance and Classical the group rounded itself off by the inclusion of Josh in 2005, who added his own flavor of soulful R&B, Hip-Hop and gospel. Their unique synthesis of sounds earned them a recording deal with Sony Urban/DAS/Columbia Records and they released their first album House of Fatty Koo in 2005. The album peaked at number 22 on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop albums, giving the group a public outlet for their unique voice. Their lead single "Bounce" was featured on ABC's coverage of the NBA Playoffs that year. The group also appeared on TV in 2005, the first episode of their reality TV show aired on Thursday, April 21, 2005.
