The wildly successful and highly acclaimed alternative rock band Foo Fighters owes its place among the best bands in rock and roll history due to the personality, ambition, talent and genius of lead singer, songwriter and vocalist Dave Grohl. Long on hair and quick with a joke, Grohl bravely leads the Foo Fighters into battle night after night on the road, and fuels their radio-friendly hit songs with subtly deep lyrics and just enough metal to get a biting taste in your ear. The Foo Fighters show no sign of slowing down as they enter into their second decade as leaders in the rock genre. The popularity and appeal of their 2007 album Echoes, Silence, Patience & Grace, complete with hit songs “The Pretender” and “Let It Die,” made their continued potency perfectly clear.
Dave Grohl was the drummer for the influential grunge band Nirvana before front man Kurt Cobain died tragically in 1994. Nirvana disbanded almost immediately and Grohl was left contemplating throwing away his drumsticks for good. Instead he decided to pursue writing his own music, as he has been actively jotting down ideas for songs while on tour with Nirvana, learning and emulating Cobain the whole while. Grohl had plenty of material to launch Foo Fighter’s first self-titled album, complete with a hit song “This is a Call.”
After breaking the shell of music industry success, Foo Fighters went on to give one of their most well-known efforts. Spearheaded by songs like "Monkey Wrench," "My Hero," and "Everlong," The Colour and the Shape reached stores in 1997 as their follow-up album, solidifying the Foo Fighters as more than just a flash in the pan. Chart success aside, The Colour and the Shape served to put Grohl front and center in the growing post-grunge movement. His thrashing head, complete with wild, sweat-stiff black hair and goatee, allowed the band to reach audiences who were hip to music videos and the band’s live show.
Dozens of hit singles later, the Foo Fighters are still rocking hard and selling out shows in every city they visit. Albums like There Is Nothing Left to Lose, One by One, In Your Honor and Echoes, Silence, Patience & Grace are filled mostly with songs that will make you want to jump on your desk and wail on the air guitar, but also occasionally show Grohl’s more sensitive side, with acoustic love melodies. Fans of this band have been following Grohl for years, and their passion for Foo Fighters music should follow wherever Grohl takes them.
