To say that R&B wondergirl Georgia Anne Muldrow doesn't fit the mold of any genre of music would be an understatement. The original and sprightly young vocalist has recently emerged on the music scene with introspective neo-soul songs that blend a strong bass, sweet guitar and the occasional keyboard, combining an innovative jazz style and soulful spoken words to the mix to create one consistently pleasing sound.
Muldrow grew up under the influence of progressive jazz music, the daughter of two musicians. Her father invented instruments for the well-known Eddie Harris, while Muldrow's mother Rickie Byars performed alongside the Pharoah Sanders Ensemble while also co-founding the Sound of Agape Rhythms. The combination of music in the house growing up led Muldrow to quickly pick up instruments when she was young, including keyboards and synthesizers. A Los Angeles native, Muldrow eventually skipped town for New York, putting her musical aspirations into action. The young musician recorded the songs for her 2005 EP Worthnothings immediately following the move, self-releasing it and eventually gaining recognition from the experimental urban R&B trio Sa-Ra, as well as the underground rap duo the Platinum Pied Pipers, with whom Muldrow recorded three songs with.
The EP also caught the attention of Peanut Butter Wolf, the owner of Stones Throw Records, who offered Muldrow a recording contract on the label. Muldrow obliged, and in 2006 Stones Throw re-released Worthnothings, which was shortly followed by the talented and passionate musician's follow-up album, 2006's Olesi- Fragments of an Earth. The latter was a more ‘70s jazz-based album, flowing freely with a hip-hop beat that was well-received and garnered a large fan base. The funky-fresh music of Georgia Anne Muldrow was once again recreated in the artist's next album, 2007's Pattie Blingh- Sagala, and at this rate the R&B world's fresh face will continue to pump out hits into oblivion.
