While Groove Theory only released one album, they have left a lasting impact on R&B and the neo-soul style. New Yorker Amel Larrieux met rapper Bryce Wilson in 1991. Wilson was a former rapper with Matronix and ready to move onto something else involving production. Larrieux had a voice that could blow anyone away, but she needed the perfect way to showcase it. Both saw collaboration as a chance to expand their careers and soon the duo started making music together as Groove Theory.

Groove Theory released their self-titled debut album in 1995 and soon started getting recognized. "Tell Me," from that album, reached the top ten on two charts. They followed that single up with "Keep Tryin'," which went to number 24 on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Singles & Tracks chart and 64 on the Billboard Hot 100. Their third single from that release, "Baby Luv," did similarly to "Keep Tryin'" and went to number 23 on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Singles & Tracks chart and 65 on the Billboard Hot 100. The success of the singles pushed the album to number 14 on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart and number 69 on the Billboard 200.

The success couldn't keep the group together, however, and Larrieux soon left to pursue a solo career. She was replaced by Makeda Davis, but Groove Theory did not release another record. They did release one single in 200, "4 Shure," which reached number 97 on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Singles & Tracks chart. Since leaving Groove Theory, Larrieux has released four solo albums, all of which have charted on R&B and mainstream charts. Her highest-charting single was 2000's "Get Up." Bryce Wilson has continued to produce music as well as act. He has appeared in films like Beauty Shop, The Stick Up Kids and Jury of Our Peers.
