Known as one of the sexiest men of rap, Heavy D doesn't let his 300+ pounds slow him down. The rapper got his start in Jamaica, where he was born Dwight Myers to a film technician and nurse. He moved to Mt. Vernon with his family, and before long was making demo tapes with friends. In high school, he started the group the Boyz with DJ Eddie F (born Eddie Ferrell), Trouble T-Roy (born Troy Dixon) and G-Wiz (born Glen Parrish). Officially known as Heavy D and the Boyz, Heavy D was in charge of creating the music, along with Eddie D and T-Roy, while G-Whiz worked on the group's image. The boys produced their first single, "Mr. Big Stuff," which showed the diversity of these rappers. Growing up on soul, hip-hop, R&B and rap, the boys created a sound that was unlike any other rap artists of the time. Their debut single stormed the radio waves and the boys recorded their first full-length album, Living Large, which was released in 1987. The album went gold, and eventually platinum.
Though the boys saw success, they didn't hit commercial acclaim until the breakthrough, 1989 album Big Tyme. Several of the hit singles reached the Top Ten R&B charts and demonstrated Heavy D's growth as a singer and songwriter. He was now recognized not only for his eclectic sound but also for his exclusion of profanities that so many other rappers welcomed.
Continuing to release successful hybrid albums, Heavy D turned to acting. He appeared in popular television series like Booker and In Living Color, and also wrote the theme song for The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. He continued to work with the Boyz, while also creating Jamaican dance club singles. He has continued to perfect his music, while also landing a recurring role as the counselor on the Fox drama Boston Public.
