The Disney channel movie High School Musical has been making headlines since its television release in 2006. The musical starred up and coming actors Zac Effron, Vanessa Hudgens, Ashley Tisdale and Lucas Grabeel. The film tells the story of a high school basketball star who meets new girl Gabrielle (played by Hudgens) and discovers that he has a passion for singing, which is considered "uncool" for the all-around heartthrob of the school and son of the Varsity basketball coach.
The soundtrack was released the same time that the original movie premiered, and had 10 tracks from the movie. Recorded in five days, the album debuted at number 143 on the Billboard 200 charts before making it to the number one spot on the Billboard album chart in March. The album not only set several records with Billboard charts, but also with Walt Disney Records, which saw the label's highest-ranked Hot 100 song in its 50 year history with the single "Breaking Free."
The first movie debuted in early 2006 to rave reviews and saw newcomers Hudgens and Tisdale recording their own albums, V and Headstrong, respectively. High School Musical The Concert appeared, which had the live versions of 14 of the tracks from the film, including "Get'cha Head in the Game" and "Start of Something New." This album made it to number 28 on the Billboard 200 and number one on the Top Kid Audio album charts.
In August 2007 a sequel appeared, and the most recent production is the full length feature film High School Musical 3 Senior Year which will be released in October 2008.
