He was a talented guitarist and bandleader. She was an onstage powerhouse, reeling and shaking with energy, both sexual and otherwise. Together, Ike and Tina were one of contemporary pop music's most popular married acts, entertaining fans with songs that crossed the border of R&B by being charged with the spirit of rock 'n' roll.
Ike, born Izear Luster Turner, Jr., had been a professional musician throughout the '40s and '50s, playing R&B and bowling over fans. In 1956, Ike ran into a young singer whom he would eventually marry. Her name--Anna Mae Bullock--was changed to Tina, and her gospel background meant she'd be a good vocalist. But no one in the band had an idea of just how powerful a vocalist she really was until she roared into the microphone one night. Like a primal scream or a cannon volley, Tina's voice carried with it a threat, a punch that would knock the crowd back.
By '58, Ike had married Tina. One day, when he was due to record a song called "A Fool in Love," the male vocalist never showed up. Tina took over vocal duties, and the song drove up the R&B charts to number two. Tina's career was made. In short time, the Ike and Tina Turner Revue featured back-up dancers and a reputation for having one of the wildest live shows anywhere.
Eventually, Ike and Tina paired with infamous producer Phil Spector, who brought his Wall of Sound approach to their music. Spector crafted the song "River Deep, Mountain High," which became legendary as one of Ike and Tina's best songs ever, as well as Spector's. Sadly, the single was virtually ignored in America (though it was highly successful in the U.K.). As a result, the album River Deep, Mountain High wasn't released in the U.S.
A few years later, the band's most popular album, Workin' Together, would be released. Unfortunately, Ike Turner's well publicized addictions and violent behavior led Tina to leave him and pursue her own successful musical career.
