Jack Johnson started his fame as a professional surfer, becoming an exceptional athlete on the Pipeline. He was Hawaii's surfer darling until a near fatal accident brought Johnson to the sandy shores and away from the pounding waves. His disappointment was evident, but Johnson chose not to dwell on his misfortune and instant concentrated his energies on other creative outlets such as making music and films. He started touring with G. Love and Special Sauce, who were impressed by his lazy blues style, and his songwriting abilities caught the attention of Ben Harper, who helped Johnson with his debut, Brushfire Fairytales. His most recent effort is called Sleep Through the Static, was released in February 2008 and it has received rave reviews from critics, who cite the songs as exhibiting Johnson's most sorrowful tone, but it is also a tone that lulls and soothes.
