Those who frequent dance clubs, no matter what area of the world they are in, have undoubtedly been inundated by the music of Jamiroquai for the past 10 years. While the lineup of the band seems change often, a constant has been the presence of front man Jason Kay on vocals. Kay was born on December 30, 1969 in England. He and his jazz singing mother moved to London during his teens, where he was influenced by the eclectic music scene there. By the age of 15, Kay was thrown out of his house and tried to find work to support himself. Before long, he was getting butting heads with local law enforcement over his thefts.
Kay was stabbed and nearly died, and the attack was a wakeup call. He turned from crime to music and found the 1990s acid jazz scene a welcome place to start his new career. He soon formed his own band and called the concoction Jamiroquai. The band released the song "When You Gonna Learn" in 1992, which led to a record deal with Sony. They released their debut album in 1993 titled Emergency on Planet Earth, which was a success in England.
The band increased their reach with the follow up release, The Return of the Space Cowboy, which dropped in 1995. Not only did England love this release, but Japan had caught the Jamiroquai fever as well. The United States was their next target, which was conquered when they made the charts with the 1996 release, Travelling Without Moving. Their next three albums also made it onto the U.S. charts with Synkronized in 1999, A Funk Odyssey in 2001 and Dynamite in 2005. The band also released a greatest hits album in 2006 followed by High Times Singles 1992-2006 in 2008.
