Scruffy and awkward looking, John Mayer has little to complain about. This Connecticut born singer and songwriter has seen wild amounts of success in his sole decade in the music industry.
Mayer didn't pick up a guitar until he was in his early teens, and when a neighbor gave him a Stevie Ray Vaughan tape, he was simultaneously exploring pop and blues outlets. While in high school he played in blues bars and performed with a group called Villanova Junction, which also included Joe Beleznay, Tim Procaccini and Rich Wolf. After attending Boston's Berklee School of Music for a short time, he realized that he wanted to pursue his options in music rather than just studying it. He moved to Atlanta to find something real.
Performing in coffee houses around Georgia, he appeared in the 2000 South by Southwest Music Festival, which led him to a recording contract with Aware Records. His major label debut Room for Squares featured a full electric band that was unlike the original Room for Squares album. Much of this change was due to producer John Alagia, who had previously worked with the Dave Matthews Band. Mayer saw success with the single "Your Body Is a Wonderland," earning him a Grammy for Best Male Pop Vocal in 2002. With a cross-country tour, Mayer's fan base great steadily. He released Any Given Thursday, a live album that once again put him on the charts.
His follow up Heavier Things earned him a Grammy for Song of the Year for "Daughters." Trying something new, he organized a trio that included bassist Pino Palladino and drummer Steve Jordan. The group, called the John Mayer Trio, toured the nation and released Try! John Mayer Trio Live in Concert. Just a few months later Continuum debuted. The album earned Mayer yet another Grammy, this time for Best Pop Vocal Album.
