Johnny was pretty up front about what he liked and didn't like. When his brother-in-law Mike Nocito got together with some friends to form a band in 1986, they found Johnny's detest of jazz so amusing they decided to name their band after it.
What grew out of that is one of the oddest names in the stable of New Romantic bands coming out of England in the '80s--Johnny Hates Jazz. Sadly, their name is what most people would remember them best for, as their single pop hit, "Shattered Dreams," would become so overplayed on the radio that their brief flash of success was quickly snuffed out.
Johnny Hates Jazz was a trio consisting of vocalist and pianist Clark Datchler, keyboardist Calvin Hayes and bassist Mike Nicito. The band's smooth, glossy pop seemed to be naturally winning. After gigging about for a while, and releasing the single "Me and My Foolish Heart," the band played a club that would change their lives. It was a jazz club, of course.
But their set so impressed the A&R staff there that they found themselves with a contract. "Shattered Dreams" was their first big hit, scoring a number one on the Billboard charts and finding plenty of airplay domestically in the U.K., as well.
"So much for your promises/They died the day you let me go/Caught up in a web of lies/But it was just too late to know/I thought it was you/Who would stand by my side/And now youve given me, given me/Nothing but shattered dreams, shattered dreams/Feel like I could run away, run away/From this empty heart/You said you'd die for me," Datchler sings on that song.
The band's debut, Turn Back the Clock, eventually went multi-platinum.
Shortly afterward, Datchler split from the band, deciding to go out on his own and form a solo career. The band members trucked on, releasing one follow-up, Tall Stories, which sold poorly. The band broke up soon afterward.
