The 1970s started a trend of pop-country folksingers in America, and leading the pack was none other than Juice Newton, whose hit singles "The Sweetest Thing (I've Ever Known)" and "Queen of Hearts" can still be heard on radio stations throughout the country. Newton's country songs had enough ‘60s pop ingrained into them to successfully cross over from the country world to the pop realm, and thus she had two massive groups of audiences, which could possibly be why she achieved such widespread fame and phenomenal success in her music career.

Newton started playing the guitar in high school, and by the time she was in college she was a regular folksinger in coffeehouses. Newton eventually joined Otha Young to form the band Dixie Peach, which turned into the more country-based band Juice Newton & Silver Spur. After losing a record deal with RCA as Juice Newton & Silver Spur, Newton went solo. Her debut album Juice, released in 1981, contained the hit song "Angel of the Morning," which peaked at 22 on the country charts. Another hit from the album, "Queen of Hearts," had a more ‘80s pop feel, and reached number two on the pop charts. "The Sweetest Thing (I've Ever Known)" was by far the most popular song on Juice, peaking at number one on the country charts and number seven on the pop charts.

Juice Newton went on to release seven more solo albums throughout her career, scoring several more Top 40 hits and even winning a Grammy for Best Female Country Vocal Performance. After 1989's Ain't Gonna Cry, Newton took a break from producing albums to perform concerts and in nightclubs. In 1998, almost 10 years after her last album, Newton released her final project, The Trouble With Angels, a compilation of re-recorded hits and new songs.
