Female rappers seem to be typecast more than just about anyone else in the music industry, but Kanary Diamonds stands out as a rapper as unique as her namesake. Kanary hails from Watts, California, which has a rich history of both music and hip-hop. She originally did not gravitate toward rap and instead started dancing when she was only three. She started backup dancing for other artists, and at the same time had always written poetry. She was also an accomplished singer. While in her teens, she started rapping and found that she had more than a knack for it.

The newfound talent led Kanary to form a girl group with two other artists. Instead of the traditional format, the group had two rappers and one singer. It was with that group that she first started going by Kanary Diamonds. She was trying to think of an artist name and knew of the name Kanary. When she found out the origin was the rare Kanary Diamonds, she saw it as the perfect moniker with which to launch her career. The girl group never truly became successful, but Kanary was ready to go it alone.

She got her first break in 2005 when she appeared on the album Hustlers Handbook by Mack 10. She got introduced to the rapper through a mutual friend. Kanary was at the studio when Mack 10 was recording and he invited her to perform with him. She didn't initially think her work would make it onto the album at all, but its appearance started a buzz about this young female rapper. A year later, she had another massive opportunity for exposure when she was featured on Chingy's album Hoodstar. From there, she was in the movie Waist Deep, which she also got to record on the soundtrack for. Since then, her songs have been heard around the industry as she prepares to release an album.
