Katy Perry was born on October 25, 1984 in Santa Barabara, California. Katy grew up in a strict, and slightly overbearing Christian family where both parents were pastors. She recalls her parents banning secular music because they believed that it was of the devil. Katy's first album was a Christian Music album which was released under the name Katy Hudson, which she eventually changed. Katy Hudson was a mismatched CCM album that seemed perhaps a little bizarre in some places, but showed promise that was fulfilled when Katy later grew in popularity with a wider audience.

Katy Perry began her road towards mainstream popularity at the age of 17, as she started working with Glen Ballard. Later on she teamed up with the Grammy-nominated songwriting and production team the Matrix, coming onto a project that was already in the works as one of two singers. But, unfortunately, the album never reached the public arena. Even though the project was shelved, Katy was able to get enough notoriety from it to get recognition from the media as "The Next Big Thing." She eventually signed with Columbia in 2007.

Katy Perry's debut album One Of The Boys was released on June 17, 2008 with Capitol Records. Katy began to gain notice right away, as one of the songs was titled "I Kissed a Girl." This song along with the song "Ur So Gay" which also sparked a wide-spread controversy mostly carried out over the internet and incensed some members of the gay community. The album reached number nine on the Billboard 200. "I kissed a girl" became a hit single topping the charts at number one on The Billboard Hot 100. "Ur So Gay" hit number one on the Dance charts and "Hot ‘N Cold" which earned number five spot on the Billboard Hot 100.
