International acclaim didn't come easily for producer James Murphy. Sure, he was one of the most talked about hip hop disc jockey's in all of New York, owned his own record label, is one half of DFA (a production team), and was named 26 in NME's Annual "Cool List," but he didn't see true success until he released some of his own material with the group LCD Soundsystem.
But Murphy's luck hasn't always paraded for the better. After graduating with an English degree, he began talking to producers for a new sitcom. After looking over a few scripts he decided that he'd rather pursue a career in music and never returned their calls about a staff writer position. The show became one of the biggest comedy shows on American television - Seinfeld. But Murphy felt content that there was something more - and after personal phone calls from everyone from Duran Duran to Janet Jackson, he finally feels like he's felt success.
After a momentary panic attack, Murphy pieced together the single "Losing My Edge" and released the EP, with the B-Side single "Movement," in 2002. The indie record was a total success as it name dropped just about every rock star and outlet imaginable, jetting Murphy into "cool-dom." The single was the first on DFA (Death from Above), his production group that formed in 1999 with Tim Goldsworthy. By the end of 2004 LCD released several more singles and earned a name for the DFA label. The boys, who had already been working individually with loads of artists, started gaining a reputation that allowed them to follow up work with N.E.R.D, Le Tigre, Metro Area and more. The group's second album, Sound of Silver, appeared in 2007.
