Relatively unknown gospel singer Marvin Sapp got the break of a lifetime when he was recruited to join the lineup for the legendary gospel group Commissioned. Sapp recorded with the group until 1995, when Commissioned disbanded, and then embarked on a solo career which has seen him consistently churning out gospel albums well into the new millennium.

Marvin Sapp hails from Grand Rapids, Michigan, where the singer bases his JOY Ministries outreach program. Sapp began singing with the Commissioned in the early ‘90s when he replaced Keith Staten (who went on to pursue solo projects) on the stage. Along with Fred Hammond, Mitchell Jones, Mike Williams and Karl Reid, Sapp recorded albums Number 7 and Matters of the Heart and also the group's final record, 1996's Irreplaceable Love (after Hammond and Williams left). After the group's dissolution, Sapp released an eponymous debut solo album on Word Records in March 1996. Marvin Sapp was produced by former Commissioned member Fred Hammond and spawned the hit singles "Calling Me" and "In His Presence."

In May 1997 Sapp issued his sophomore solo album, Grace & Mercy. Two years later Sapp released his third effort, Nothing Else Matters. Then Sapp took a hiatus from recording albums, but returned with the single "I Believe," which appeared on the 2002 Wow Gospel album. A string of gospel records followed, first with 2002's I Believe. Next up, Sapp released 2003's Diary of a Psalmist, 2005's Be Exalted and 2007's Thirsty. Sapp professes himself not to be a preaching singer but rather a Preacher called on by God to deliver his message through the gift of music of which he has been blessed. Sapp has received numerous accolades, such as Stellar Awards and Gospel Music Awards and nominations for the Dove Awards, Grammy's and Soul Train Music Awards.
