The story of MercyMe starts with lead singer Bart Millard breaking both of his ankles in high school. The injury led to him trying choir and beginning his work in music. The death of his father five years later sent him looking for an outlet, which he again found in music. He moved to Florida to play in a youth group's praise band. At a youth convention, he met keyboardist Jim Bryson and the two teamed up and toured Europe in 1994.

By this time, they were starting to feel a calling toward a career in music and added guitarist Mike Scheuchzer. The three moved to Oklahoma City and took the moniker MercyMe. Soon they were opening for established Christian acts like Audio Adrenaline and started adding more members. Today's lineup also includes Barry Graul on guitar, Robby Shaffer on drums and Nathan Cochran on bass. The band had an invitation to move to Texas and started booking gigs instantly. They soon had 200 performances in a year booked.

The band found a hunger for good praise and worship music within the Christian community. Not only was the group musically talented, but it was also made up of men of integrity who could be good examples to the community. For most of their early career, MercyMe was an independent act without a record contract. They were selling albums themselves, but decided to join a record company to further expand their reach. They have enjoyed incredible success with a variety of their albums including a Christmas album in 2006. Their success has not just been in the Christian realm, however, as their talent has been recognized on the secular charts as well. They continue to produce albums that fans love and appreciate.
