Michelle Williams originally became famous as a member of the chart-topping group Destiny's Child, which she joined back in 2000. The singer was born on July 23, 1980 in Rockford, Illinois. Her birth name was Tenetria Michelle Williams. She performed her first solo, "Blessed Assurance" as a part of the choir at her church, St. Paul Church of God, at the age of seven. Growing up her first experiences with singing, outside of her church, was with the gospel groups United Harmony and Chosen Expression.

In 1999 a friend of hers became the keyboardist for R&B star Monica Arnold. He gave her the heads up that there was an opening for a background singer for the artist, resulting in her first big break in music. She toured as a part of Monica's group from May to October of that year, and then was invited to be a part of Destiny's Child in January of 2000. Her first recording with the group was on the number one single "Independent Women Part I." The song was an appropriate one to debut with a premier rising female group of the new millennium, and marked a turning point in William's history.

On April 16, 2002 Michelle Williams became the first member of Destiny's Child to release a solo album. It was a gospel album entitled Heart to Yours, the first part of the album dealt very softly with the themes of religion, staying away from the ‘in-your-face' approach that might have marked Williams as a hard-core Christian artist. The second half of the album, however, left no room for speculation as it refers to "Wonderful counselor/Mighty God." More recently, however, she has moved away from the gospel focus and leaned more heavily into the pop genre.
