Known for their sometimes brash and always hypnotizing indie rock music and an accompanying wave of emo followers, Modest Mouse is one extremely well-known noise pop group that has single-handedly propelled the indie movement through the late ‘90s and into the prosperous ‘00s. Energetically pessimistic albums like Good News for People Who Love Bad News have exploded across genres, giving light to the lo-fi movement that captures the essence of Modest Mouse at its best.
Vocalist/guitarist Isaac Brock, bassist Eric Judy and drummer Jeremiah Green began the Modest Mouse saga in 1993 in "The Shed," a makeshift practice space built next to Brock's mother's trailer in Issaquah, Washington. After countless hours spent improvising and rehearsing in The Shed, the up-and-coming trio moved on to indie rocker Calvin Johnson's Dub Narcotic Studios to record their self-titled album, debuting in 1994 off Johnson's K Records label. Flowing with their continuing momentum, Modest Mouse next signed with the Up label, releasing albums This Is A Long Drive for Someone With Nothing To Think About (1996) and Interstate 8 (1996). One more album released on K Records led the three envisioned mice to their breakout album, 1997's The Lonesome Crowded West. The release was momentous for the group, and it attracted bigger fish in the label pond. Modest Mouse ultimately struck a deal with Sony, releasing albums Building Nothing Out of Something (2000) and the long-awaited The Moon & Antarctica (2000).
Singles like "3rd Planet" and "Tiny Cities Made of Ashes," both off The Moon & Antarctica, struck a chord with the indie realm, prepping fans for the trio's biggest release yet, 2004's Good News for People Who Love Bad News. The album garnered huge success with the hit single "Float On," and the mousey indie band has been floating on through the business ever since, releasing more hit albums and embarking on nationwide tours.
