Monty Python offers everyone a much-needed dose of hilarity in their lives and through their bizarre nature and the desire to remain those "British oddballs," Monty Python has endured through many years. The ensemble began in 1969 with Monty Python's Flying Circus, which offered British viewers an escape into a world filled with original caricatures and remarkably hilarious situations in every sketch. The actors who dreamed up this silly, surreal world of comedy included, John Cleese, Graham Chapman, Eric Idle, Michael Palin, Terry Jones and eventually Terry Gilliam. Together this troupe of comedians brought laughter to a whole new level.
Monty Python cut out needless punch lines from all of their sketches, some of which include the notorious Spam sketch and the well-known Lumberjack Song which became staples of Monty Python in the years to come. Monty Python's Flying Circus became an instant sensation on British television, with the creators being thrown into a world of fame, which they accepted rather nonchalantly.
Monty Python would extend far beyond the confines of the small screen. Their creative genius was just too big to contain and starting in the 1970s the creators of the group released several memorable feature films. Monty Python and the Holy Grail, a spoof on Arthurian legend became a classic example of low-budget success. Immediately following was the Life of Brian, a wary look into the world of organized religion. The Life of Brian is often considered to be their greatest work on film, with Monty Python and the Holy Grail coming in a close second. In the past couple years a stage adaptation of Monty Python was created. Spamalot has become an instant sensation in the West End in London and on Broadway in New York City.
