The Mormon Tabernacle Choir consists of 360 members who all hail from different backgrounds and professions from the ages 25 to 60. All singers are volunteers and are all members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.

The choir first appeared on August 22, 1847, just 29 days after Brigham Young and his 147 followers first settled in Salt Lake City. Brigham Young was the colonizer and president of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. After being given the Book of Mormon by Joseph Smith's brother Samuel, Young was baptized and began preaching. Once Young's colony was settled, John Parry was named the official choir conductor in 1849. Just two years later the first Tabernacle Church was constructed and by 1867 the dome-roofed Tabernacle facility was created, which still stands today. The 150-member choir was the largest United States choir ever seen.

In 1910 the Mormon Tabernacle Choir made their first recordings with Columbia Records, which had their infamous 2000 piped organ accompany them. In 1929 their weekly radio broadcast Music and the Spoken Word appeared on the CBS affiliate KSL, and still remains on the air. The television series is a 30-minute broadcast of choral music and inspirational words, which has been lead by Lloyd Newell since 1990. They have sold millions of records, earned tons of awards, including a Grammy in 1959 for their recording of "The Battle Hymn of the Republic." They have performed around the world and are based in Salt Lake City at the headquarters of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Complimentary groups The Orchestra at Temple Square and The Temple Square Chorale both perform with the Mormon Tabernacle Choir on their show while also performing on their own. Both groups were formed in 1999 and are formed by volunteer members of the church as well.
