Smooth jazz artist Najee puts a sweet R&B spin on his saxophone improvisations, making him one of the most prominent instrumentalists throughout the ‘80s and early ‘90s. While Najee has been compared to other instrumentalists who have seen legendary commercial success (Kenny G, George Howard and David Koz) Najee's sound has created a harmony that is reminiscent of legend Grover Washington, Jr. with a little fire.
Born in New York, Najee grew up in the music industry. Initially part of Chaka Khan's band in 1983, he is a saxophone king, playing the tenor, alto and soprano saxophones with great ease. But the long time instrumentalist didn't retreat much like his competitor Kenny G to just one instrument; Nejee also plays the flute and keyboards (two instruments that are extremely diverse from the saxophone as compared to the clarinet or other wind instruments) as has used his keen sense of tones over the years to create music that soothes the soul.
As one of the first innovators of urban contemporary jazz, Najee has commercialized on the genre to such an extent that some critics have believed his music is too centrally devoted to the commercial radio airplay that other jazz enthusiasts have surrounded themselves in. His debut album, Najee's Theme appeared in 1987 followed by three more Gold certified albums. In 1988 he was nominated for a Grammy for his debut album and throughout the ‘90s earned several Soul Train Music, Best Jazz Artist Awards. He has seen a heavy list of influential collaborations over the years and has continued to record into the most recent decade.
