If you want to get a real dose of true Southern rap, you might want to check out the music put forth by the group known as Nappy Roots. With their freewheeling ways and street smart attitudes, the members of Nappy Roots took it upon themselves to release tunes portraying the sounds of the South. The group initially formed in 1995, comprised of six students who were all attending Western Kentucky University. The members were Kinny DeVille, B. Stille, Ron Clutch, Big V., R. Prophet and Milledgeville. Nappy Roots then began making music as a team at a local record shop and were eventually encouraged to put their work on a record. Thus was the birth of a new kind of Southern rap, and the members of Nappy Roots were certainly at the helm.

Nappy Roots released their first full length album, called Country Fried Cess, in 1998. With their undeniable twist on the sounds of Southern rap, Nappy Roots began gaining worldwide attention, and record labels suddenly took notice of this little group from Kentucky. Eventually, they signed to Atlantic Records, and their label debut called Watermelon, Chick and Critz hit the stores in 2002. The album is loaded with easy, good time feeling tunes and features the hits "Kentucky Mud" and "Awnaw."

The group released their follow up effort in 2003, this one called Wooden Leather. Like the album before it, this one also generated record amounts of attention and spawned a few hits for Nappy Roots that included "Push On," "Work in Progress" and "These Walls." In August 2008, the group released their most recent effort, a record titled The Humdinger. With the same celebratory feel and upbeat tunes, like "Beads and Braids" and "Down 'N Out," Nappy Roots once again definitely does not disappoint.
