Who can forget the catchy song "99 Luftballons"? The song is courtesy of none other than German pop singer Nena. It made it big on the charts in Germany and even floated to the top of the charts in the United States. Nena Kerner, along with Carlo Karges, Uwe Fahrenkrog-Petersen, Jurgen Dehmel and Rolf Brendel, made up the band Nena and were an immediate smash hit in Germany especially following their hit release, "Nur Getraumt," which sailed to number one in many German-speaking countries. Nena went on to become a phenomenon after the release of "99 Lufballons." There is even an English version of the song, and it has been used time and again for television shows and movies.

The hit song was released in the U.S. in 1984, and the band enjoyed great success, although only for a short time. The sales of the band's records dropped after "99 Luftballons," as did their concert attendance. The band broke up in 1987, and Nena, the band's founder, went on to pursue a solo career. Her first solo tour took place in 1993 and was a moderate success, although several pregnancies put a halt to her touring for while until she once again made an appearance in 1997. She has been a popular figure on German television throughout the 1990s and has also committed herself to making children's albums.

In 2001, she tried to switch gears by introducing a new, electronic sound with the album Chokmah, but it failed to gain much attention. The following year, she celebrated the 20th anniversary of her breakthrough success in the music industry by releasing Feat. Nena, Live. Fans were thrilled and embraced the album wholeheartedly. Nena then followed up with the 2005 record Whillst Du Mit Mir Gehn, which showcased a heavier style of rock music.
