Forming in the late '80s as a punk and ska band, No Doubt would eventually become one of the top-selling pop bands a decade later, paving the way for vocalist Gwen Stefani's successful solo career. The band went through many iterations and changes over the years, losing and gaining members and struggling to maintain relevance as the winds of pop music changed, but they've managed to build a dedicated group of fans all the same.

Forming in 1987, the initial lineup was John Spence and Gwen and Eric Stefani. Bassist Tony Kanal was brought on slightly later. Heavily influenced by '80s ska-pop band Madness, No Doubt played parties and small gigs around Anaheim, where they had formed, until Spence tragically committed suicide later in the year. At that point, Gwen Stefani became the vocalist and frontwoman of the band, while they added guitarist Tom Dumont and drummer Adrian Young.

By 1991, the band had earned the attention of a label, and released their self-titled debut the next year. But with alternative rock and grunge enjoying mainstream attention, their music was lost in the shuffle. They released the more punk-influenced Beacon Street Collection on their own in 1995, earning some acclaim. Eric Stefani left after its release, and just before the band blew up. Tragic Kingdom was released later that year, making them overnight superstars. The songs "Just a Girl" and "Don't Speak" were ubiquitous on the radio for the rest of year.

They wouldn't record again until 2000's Return of Saturn, which was hailed critically and shot up the charts. The following year, No Doubt released its final album, Rock Steady, after which Stefani's solo career began to pick up speed. Rock Steady's major hit single, "Hey Baby," became almost irritatingly present on the airwaves after the album's release.
