Olga Tanon

Olga Tanon has dabbled in several different variations of Latin-based music throughout her career. She's released some albums that would be classified as merengue, some as tropical and some simply as Latin pop, all the way maintaining a steady fan base.

Tanon was born in 1967 in Puerto Rico and began her singing career in the 1980s as a member of several meringue groups. It was with the group Chantelle that she got her first taste of success, scoring a hit with "Aunque Tu No Quieras" in the latter part of the decade. The group was pioneering at the time in that most meringue acts were primarily comprised of male artists.

Tanon released her first solo album in 1992 with Sola. The heavily meringue-influenced record showed some promise and hinted at what was to come for the vocalist. The following year she released her sophomore effort, Mujer de Fuego. The album did much better commercially than her debut, spawning several singles that landed on the Latin charts. Her third release, Siente el Amor..., also sold well, as did a compilation of her first three releases, Exitos y Mas, released in 1995. At this point, Tanon had established herself as a premier artist in the tropical genre.

With 1996's Nuevos Senderos, fans saw a change in style for Tanon, as the record featured a much more pop-driven sound, departing somewhat from the more traditional meringue style featured on her first three releases. The album proved successful as a Latin Pop record, showing her crossover appeal on a large scale. She did not take long to return to her roots, as 1997's Llévame Contigo featured the familiar meringue vibe that garnered Tanon her initial fan base and became her first record to reach the number one spot on the Top Latin Albums chart.

Since, Tanon has released a multitude of albums and earned two Grammy Awards. She remains a chart-topping heavyweight in the Latin music world.
