Although Patsy Cline's life and career was cut tragically short, her legacy is almost unmatched in the country music genre. She blazed the trail for the numerous female musicians to follow along with other stars like Brenda Lee and Kitty Wells. She was born Virginia Patterson Hensley in 1932 in Winchester, Virginia. When she was young she was more interested in dancing than music, but she later switched to music. She learned to play the piano by ear. She had a fever in her teens that nearly killed her, but she emerged with an even greater drive to pursue music.
She married Gerald Cline in 1953, getting her last name. She was known as Patsy by Bill Peer, the man who helped end Cline's marriage because of an affair she has with him. She divorced Cline in 1956, but wasn't single long as she married husband Charlie Dick in 1957. The couple had two children together, Julie and Randy. During this time in her life, Cline was also starting her recording career. She released many singles, but it would be her song "Walkin' After Midnight" that would catapult her to stardom in 1957. She performed the song live on Arthur Godfrey's Talent Scouts, which pushed it onto multiple charts.
Her career took an even better turn in 1960, when she was released from a hampering record deal as was able to work with producer Owen Bradley. She came out with the top song "I Fall to Pieces," which started to show fans what Cline was capable of. Cline was in a severe car crash in 1961 with her bother Sam, but the crash did little to slow her career. She released a song written by Willie Nelson, "Crazy" soon after, which pushed her even more into the spotlight. Before her full potential could be seen, Cline was killed in a airplane crash in 1963. She was 30 years old.
