Peggy Lee was one of the most charming and talented singers of her time. Her abilities as a singer and songwriter resonate with listeners across the world to this day.
Peggy Lee, born Norma Egstrom, grew up in North Dakota, where she made her radio debut at the tender age of 14. Adopting the name "Peggy Lee," she performed in northern U.S. cities before attempting to make a name for herself, though twice unsuccessfully, in Hollywood. She caught a break in 1941 when Benny Goodman, whose band was about to lose its vocalist, caught a glimpse of Lee's talent at a club in Chicago. She recorded "Elmer's Tune" just days after making Goodman's acquaintance.
Lee found success in Goodman's band with the hit "Why Don't You Do Right" but she also found love. Lee married Goodman band guitarist Dave Barbour in 1943 and opted for the domestic life. Lee couldn't abandon music for long and, after a year at home, she recorded on an all-star jazz album and eventually signed a solo deal with Capitol in 1945. Lee tore up the charts in the late ‘40s and her song "Manana (Is Soon Enough for Me)" was the biggest hit of 1948.
Lee spent the much of the ‘50s writing music influenced by Latin, cabaret and pop music. In the ‘60s she was one of the more willing established artists to make the transition to rock and roll. She continued to record and released her final Capitol LP, Norma Deloris Egstrom From Jamestown, North Dakota, in 1972. Lee kept on writing songs for other labels before retiring in the early ‘80s. She returned in 1988 with two LPs full of her early work. Moments Like This, her final record, was released in 1992. Lee passed away in 2002, but decades of songs remain for people to remember her by.
