Using Paul's words from the first Corinthians as part of the chorus track on their 5th full-length album, For Love of the Game, Pillar combines their Christian background with a rock/rap exterior. The four-person band now from Tulsa, Oklahoma, originally began in 1998 at Ft. Hays State University in northwestern Kansas. The group produced their first album, Metamorphosis, on their own, and it immediately attracted record label Flicker to their cause. Only two years later, now with Flicker alongside to help produce, they created their second album Above. Continuing on their quest not only to touch the souls of their fans but create an understanding of today's society. Pillar released four more albums within the next few years; Fireproof in 2002, Where Do We Go from Here in 2004, The Reckoning in 2006 and most recently, For Love of the Game.
The group, which includes Rob Beckley, Lester Estelle on drums, Noah Henson on guitar and Kalel on bass, is proud of their Christian background. On their latest album, For Love of the Game, the song "Turn it Up" uses other Christian band's album or song title as their lyrics, "In the healing rain (Michael W. Smith)/There is beauty for pain (Superchic[k])/But the scars remain (Disciple)."
Performing for Christian audiences rather than the mainstream, Pillar moved to Geffen and then back to Flicker after Geffen dropped them before an album was ever produced. Their hardcore, rock persona does anything but talk lightly about some of the topics that press on core Christian values. The song "Dirty Little Secret," from their album Where Do We Go from Here, touches on the issue of pornography. Beckley reveals that he previously struggled with an addiction to internet porn, and through his singing crusade helps fans to understand God's forgiveness.
Their name truly demonstrates all that this group has gone through. After the production of Fireproof, guitarist Travis Jenkins and drummer Brad Noone left the band to spend more time with their families. Shortly after this, vocalist Beckley, a member of the Army reserve, was almost assigned to work in Afghanistan after the September 11th attacks, but has since been put on-call. With a hit that topped Christian rock charts and landed them the Best Rock Band award at the annual Dove Awards, Pillar's strength is surely all it's cracked up to be.
