The Pussycat Dolls spurred out of the burlesque group headed by Robin Antin, the woman who formed the ensemble after her successful club had moved from its Los Angeles home to a second venue in Las Vegas, as she started casting women that could not only dance but also had to prove they had serious vocal abilities.

Born out of the A-list phenomena that circled around A-list celebrities and events, the dance pop group formed after several female celebrities were inspired by the woman-empowering movement and sought Pussycat involvement. Gwen Stefani, Kelly Osborne, Pink, Britney Spears and Pamela Anderson were just a few of the celebrities that began the revolution, wearing lingerie and costumes as they joined the Dolls on stage for their shows. The group is centered around former Eden's Crush member Nicole Scherzinger, along with Melody Thornton, Jessica Sutta, Ashley Roberts and Kimberly Wyatt. The girls are not just singers, they are also trained by the choreographer and founder Antin.

Their first single, "Don't Cha," peaked at the top of the pop charts and featured Busta Rhymes. With the help of the legendary R&B producer Timbaland, the girls started to record their first full-length album. The A&M label released PCD peaked at number five on The Billboard 200 and number seven on The Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums. Though the group tends to commercialize more on the lead singer's dance moves and voice, her solo album was at first held back due to its first unsuccessful four singles. And though the girls lost member Carmit Bachar for a solo career, they have continued to remain on the dance club hits and pop charts, most recently with their single "When I Grow Up."
