For many, there is only one way to describe Roberta Flack, which is classic sophistication. The legendary Flack has brought the sounds of romantic jazz to the forefront ever since she was first recognized during the 1970s. Her soulful, soothing sound creates a calm and peaceful mood among listeners. Roberta Flack was signed to Atlantic Records in the early 1970s and released two albums shortly afterwards. While the albums were generally well received among the public, neither record produced a hit single. Things changed quickly when her version of the Ewan MacColl song "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face" was featured on the soundtrack of the film Play Misty For Me. The song shot straight up to the number one spot on the charts in 1972 and stayed put for six straight weeks. It was the beginning of a string of successes for Flack, and she followed the initial success with several duet songs with Donny Hathaway that included "Where Is the Love."
Flack hit the number one spot again on the charts with her song "Killing Me Softly With His Song" and soon afterwards followed with "Feel Like Makin' Love." After these notable achievements, Flack took a break from recording to devote much of her time to charitable causes. In 1979, Flack was devastated when her partner and close friend, Donny Hathaway, committed suicide. After recovering from the loss of Hathaway, she found another partner with Peabo Bryson, with whom she first toured with in 1980.
Flack and Bryson recorded the hit song "Tonight I Celebrate My Love" in 1983, which kept the legendary singer in the spotlight. She spent the rest of the decade touring around the country and even teamed up with Miles Davis at one point. A popular full-length album, Roberta, appeared in 1995 and featured several different interpretations of jazz and popular music, keeping Flack as a popular performer even on into the present day.
